    The aerospace industry faces the challenge of finding solutions for the transition from manufacturing to series production of high-precision components. Matrix production is a suitable process for ensuring the advantages of manufacturing and series production to manufacture flexible batch sizes. Likewise, matrix production facilitates the integration of sustainability measures.

    Session 5: Calculating the product carbon footprint – opportunities, challenges, and implementation

    Greenhouse gases must be reduced, this is undeniable, and lightweight construction offers enormous potential to do so. 
    How can this positive impact of lightweight construction be quantified, and what quantities of greenhouse gas emissions are associated with a product throughout its entire life cycle? The product carbon footprint serves in this case as a useful tool for companies.  

    Currently, there are different reporting standards such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, but there are no concrete specifications for how to calculate the PCF for individual products. Lacking uniform calculation methods, the PCFs for the same product from different companies cannot be compared fully. In addition, especially for small and mid-sized companies, it is a challenge to implement the specifications of these standards at a reasonable cost. 
    To meet these challenges, VDMA e.V. Is developing a standard sheet in cooperation with industry for transparent and uniform PCF calculation.

    Additive manufacturing and lightweight technology are inseparable – because anyone who deals with additive processes only applies material where it is required for the function. Material efficiency therefore pays off twice when it comes to additive manufacturing: lower costs, faster printing. This session will present the status quo of the additive manufacturing landscape in Canada as well as innovative solutions in the field of artificial intelligence.
